Porta Materna is an ideal base for visiting some of Italy's finest unspoilt medieval towns & villages. From right on our doorstep to further afield:
On our doorstep
- Panicale: 13km away and totally charming. Frescoes by Perugino;
- Mongiovino Vecchio: 6km away a tiny hamlet with its own fabulous, domed Santuario;
- Castiglion Fosco: One of the many perfectly preserved, delightful hill top villages which you may want to visit for a stroll and a visit to the bar. There is also a tennis court, and a small children’s playground;
- Paciano: An attractive hill top village with good winebar style bars;
- Torgiano: The home of the Lungarotti wine, and with a good Museum of Wine;
- Castiglione del Lago: A stunning location overlooking Lake Trasimeno.
- Chianciano Terme (near Chiusi): for a different day out, book yourself into the spa Terme Sensoriali, and spend a few hours being pampered. Check out www.termesensoriali.it
Further afield
All within a maximum of 2 hours drive, these towns have plenty of significant historical, architectural, artistic interests, usually with some good local craft shopping opportunities: Arrezzo, Assissi, Citta della Pieve, Deruta (endless opportunities to buy ceramics), Foligno, Gubbio, Orvieto, Perugia, Spoleto and Todi. Florence (by train or car), and even Rome (by train) are feasible for a day trip.
